Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I MAN has announced details of a restructuring plan which will result in a further significant reduction in the ERF workforce at Middlewich.

The plan will effectively merge all of MAN and ERF's back office functions. Six new busi ness units will be created, one— MAN Financial Services— reporting to Munich and the remainder under the control of Dr Jurgen Knorpp at Swindon. They will cover truck sales and logistics, aftersales and customer support, bus and coach, asset management and used vehicles, and engines and components. Another four support units will cover military sales, finance and IT, HR and network development. With MAN's direct sales network being duplicated by the ERF brand, there will be separate sales directors for each brand.

The restructuring is expected to result in the loss of around 80 jobs from the group's UK workforce of 1,200, with some compulsory redundancies likely.

Although Swindon may be affected, the brunt of the losses will again be suffered by MIddlewich. The aftersales and engineering functions are expected to be particularly badly hit.

MAN has slowly cut the number of employees at ERF's Middlewich site since it took control of the firm, In October 2001 it slashed over three hundred workers (CM 11-18 Oct 2001) and then axed another 200 in March 2002 (CM 7-13 March 02) when it decided to end almost 70 years of vehicle manufacturing at ERF.
