75 years ago: zz May 1928

Growth in using tar for road surfacing and dust prevention had led to the problem of how to transport large quantities of the material. Foden responded by releasing its rigid six-wheeler tar tanker with a capacity of 2,3o o gallons. The vehicle was also equipped with a large heating coil so that steam from the boiler could be used to maintain the temperature of the tar, and a double-acting pump allowing the tank to be filled quickly.

50 years ago: 22 May 1953

The Minister of Transport dismissed appeals by io hauliers including Ribble Motor Services and The Railway Executive against the Scottish Licensing Authority's ability to grant a licence to Northern Roadways for services from Edinburgh and Glasgow to London. Sir Robert Tolerton said in his recommendations that "the rights of existing operators" had no foundation in law and there was no reason why a new operator should not share additional traffic.

25 years ago: 26 May 1978

Bridge and tunnel tolls had become inconsistent and should be reviewed, the Freight Transport Association warned Transport Minister William Rodgers. The trade association said that changes of circumstances over the years since the facilities were originally authorised had occurred. For instance, the Dartford Tunnel was to become part of the M25, while other bridges such as the bridge across the Clyde had little chance of repaying their debt.
