Jail since 18 March after being arrested, convicted and Jailed for people-smuggling—all within 24 hours. His legal representation at the trial couldn't speak English, and the interpreter was the local town jeweller who had no legal experience.
David, an experienced truck driver from Bradford, was sentenced to 11 years in jail—the highest sentence over imposed on a British driver. The Greek authorities have said he could be released early, pending an appeal— but only If he pays 122,000.
David's 'crime'—which he denies— was to be caught with 19 Kurdish stowaways in Ills curtainsider. This despite written conformation from all the stowaways—and their word in court— that he had no involvement at all.
Tracey spent several days wondering exactly what had happened to her husband. "He went missing for three days when it first happened. We eventually found him after he'd been transferred to another prison.
"He'd been crying his eyes out and had eaten only two apples between his arrest on the Tuesday to the Thursday David Wilson: Arrested, convicted and jailed within 24 hours last March. when he was transferred to another prison. He'd eaten only two apples because he had a filthy floor in the hole to use as a toilet!'
Tracey has visited David in prison, though the first time was very difficult. Once allowed in, she could only speak to David through Perspex and via a telephone.
"lie shared a room with around 40 other men, his mattress Is an inch thick and there's no towels or toilet paper. They have turned off the heating now because it is so hot, so he has to wash In cold water."
As CM want to press David was hopeful that he would be released this week on ball, pending an appeal later In the year. However, even If he Is granted bail the judge may Insist that he remain in Greece until the appeal hearing.
Meanwhile Tracey remains unwavering in her fight to get tier husband out of Jail: "I am furious—but the support from people Is keeping one going. I love him to bits and I want him to come home."
