BRITAIN's only state-owned haulier, MacBrayne Haulage, suffered a 9.1 per cent drop in tonnage last year, and earned £2.6m revenue.

The company, which is a Scottish Transport Group subsidiary, has suffered from the drop in demand for Scotch whisky and from competition from coastal ships. It carried 64,548 tonnes of freight last year, more than half of it from Lewis and Harris, against 70,437 in 1980.
MacBrayne Haulage results are lumped together with STG's hotel, travel, insurance, car hire, and information activities which made a net profit of £1.4m last year, against €1.8m in 1980.
Caledonian MacBrayne, the STG shipping subsidiary, made a net profit of £221,000 last year, against £152,000 in 1980. It plans to spend £6m on a new ro-ro ferry for the Ardrossan-Isle of Arran crossing.
