product is claimed by Rubery Owen-Rockwell for its axle using composite materials.
Shown for the first time at the Institute of Road Transport Engineers' exhibition at Solihull, it is part of an extensive research and development programme into reducing the weight of trailer running gear.
The axle beam, which is equivalent to the current RO-R 10tonne axle is undergoing tests, following joint development with Ciba-Geigy.
The weight of the experimental axle is 83 kg (183 kw) compared with the 123kg (271 lb) of the conventional axle and computer predictions indicate that a further weight reduction is possible with a change in axle tube diameter and some redesign of ancillary components.
The beam sections are formed using a filament wound tube consisting of carbon/glass fibre and Araldite epoxy resin systems.
The existing designs of hub, anchor brackets, and spring seats are used, and these are secured using spigots and dowels, together with structural adhesive at the joints.
