I REFER to a letter published in (CA, March 8) from Roy Caddy, marketin manager of Foden Trucks.
In it, he says: "I am most disappointed that you carried a photograph of a foreign truck engage in snow clearance with the implicatio that it is one of the vehicles operatirq our motorways. (CM, February 22 it which an Ivcco Magirus was picturce The 258 referred to are all Fodens wl re been specifically supplied to the partment of Transport to keep tam's motorways free of the worse t.cts of the weather. We have also plied some 50 gritter/snow plough issis to regional and borough councils support their efforts on A and B .ds."
doubt Roy Caddy is correct in ing that Foden has 258 vehicles rking for the DTp, but you will see n CM. February 22, that these are pose-built small plough and spreader icles, and 21 snow ploughs. To ify the matter regarding )cmsibilities, the Department of the rironment is responsible for all torway clearance throughout England Wales and, as these have to be tish built vehicles, they are in the n ['mien and ERR Vith regard to all A roads, dual iageways and below, these arc the mnsibility of the county councils and tropolitan districts in which the road . Councils deal with these in three l's.
Sub-contract out to private :ompanies, in which case they are free to buy whatever vehicles they want.
2) Do it themselves, in which case they are free to buy whatever they want.
3) Sub-contract to the DOE, in which case the DOE uses British vehicles.
In Scotland, all road clearance, including motorways, is the responsibility of the local regional office. For off-motorway work, heavy duty snow clearance machines are used in the main. Iveco Magirus has over 230 working in this area.
For Roy Caddy to say that he was disappointed in seeing a photograph of a foreign truck engaged in snow clearance causes one to ask the question: where does Roy Caddy see Foden which is a wholly-owned American company assembling trucks from mainly American manufactured parts.
If he means that he is disappointed to sec a foreign truck pictured in CM, it would be a thinner and less interesting magazine without them.
