Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Buses operated by Newcastle City Transport are now carrying posters stating that takeover of the transport undertaking under the provisions of the Transport Bill would not be in the public interest, and asking for support in demanding an independent public inquiry.

Notices on the cove panels inside buses tell passengers that the City Council has no objection to an authority being set up to coordinate transport in the Tyneside area, but sees no advantage to passengers in an Authority taking over the operation of Newcastle Transport, which has never been a charge on the rates. And the notices point out that the local railways and the other buses running into Newcastle—such as Northern, Gateshead, Tyneside and United —will not be taken over, but will be operated by their own managements as agents for the new Authority. The Council believes that Newcastle Transport should be allowed to operate under a similar arrangement.

• The 61-mile Renfrew by-pass motorway, from Glasgow to just north of Paisley. was opened on March 18.

II The Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association has now moved to its new offices at 12 Emerald Street, London, W.C.1. Telephone: 01-405 9963.
