IF possible we must ensure that if by chance next winter we are faced again ith similar conditions to those through hich we have passed this year, we are ady and that our organization is adelate to make use of the lessons which e have learned from our recent tpericnces."

This was the message from Mr. John ay, Parliamentary Secretary to the finistry of Transport, at the end of a iort Commons debate last week on snow earing operations.

The lessons to be learned from recent :periences were being reviewed, said Mr. ay. Divisional road engineers were reporting on the situation in their areas and inside the Ministry they had set up a working party under the chairmanship of a deputy-secretary to review the whole situation.

Dealing with the use of electric road heating, Mr. Hay said installation costs came out at about £3 a square yard if the heating was installed when the road was constructed and there was a supply of electricity adjacent to the site. Installing the heating on an existing road cost £4 a square yard, and the running costs were high. The Hammersmith flyover had cost £3.000 for electric de-icing operations this winter.
