A licence granted, but revoked on appeal, was recently the subject of a new application before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, when Mr. James Hurd, of Scarborough, applied for an A licence for one vehicle. The Licensing Authority stated that new evidence • would have to .be brought, as this was not a retrial, but a new application.
Evidence was given by Mr. Herbert Swift that he employed 'the applicant for six months of the year to deliver goods in all parts of the country, and, whilst he used the railways, there was considerable delay. He also stated. That there was not another vehicle in Scarborough suitable for carrying. his goods. The application was refused.
Mersey Tunnel Limit Unchanged at 35 m.p.h.
No variation will be made in the, speed limit of 35 m.p.h. at present operating in the Queensway Tunnel, pending further investigations. This decision has been reached by the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee. The maximum speed permitted in the tunnel is 35 m.p.h., as compared with the 30-in.p.h. limit in built-up areas. When the speed. limit for the tunnel . was fixed, it was understood that it was not regarded as a public highway, and, therefore, it is presumed that it will not come within the range of the 1934 Act. The committee has decided to postpone its final decision in the matter pending further investigation of the legal position.
Young Accumulator Works Extended.
On Tuesday, the extensions to the New Malden factory of the Young AcCurnulator Co. (1929), Ltd., were opened by Lord Howe, and subsequently the works were open to inspection by the large gathering representative of many interests in the motor industry.
The chairman of the company mentioned that particular attention is being paid to the development of the manufacture of the new Young superarmoured batteries, which incorporate special Porbonite separators. This process is the result of much experiment on the part of Mr. H. De Martis, who is the inventor of the Young accumulator.
Electric Control Panel of A.E.C. Design.
We are asked by the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd., Southall, Middlesex, to clarify a statement, appearing last week in our description of this concern's new electric control panel. We mentioned that the unit was designed for the company for use -on its petrol and oil-engined vehicles, and was made by C.A.V.-Bosch, Ltd., and Sirrim_s Motor Units, Ltd. We now learnt that the A.E.C. concern is itself responsible for the design, the other two companies acting only in the
capacity of manufacturers.
