On Monday next, March 25, a meeting for commercial-vehicle drivers is to he held at the Grand Hall, Old Kent Road Baths, London, S.E.15, at 8.15 p.m. This is the first of a series of meetings for drivers, to be held under the auspices of the Road Haulage Association, in various parts of Lon don. The chairman will be Major Long, Ti). J.P., and the speakers will include Mr. R. W. Sewill, chairman of the R.H.A., Mr. Norman Letts, legal adviser to the Association, and Mr. T. R. Sanders, a member of the National Council.
This is the first meeting in London at which an attempt has been made to rally drivers to the support of their own industry, and it is to be hoped £12,305 to rail transport, £3,456 to water transport, and £180 to horse hiring.
The highways committee indents for £3,224 for petrol vehicles, £836 for steam wagons, and £11,290 for horsedrawn carts. This committee oilers fair prospects for the employment of hauliers' vehicles, as provision is made in the estimates for the expenditure of £7,598 for horse hire and haulage from stations and docks.
A Spare Coil for Emergency Needs.
A new device for enabling an engine fo be started and run, despite the fact that its battery is down or its coil or condenser faulty, has been introduced by Motor Experts, Ltd., Irkdale Street, • Manchester, 8. Known as the S.O.S. emergency coil, the device embodies a that many drivers will take this opportunity of hearing the case for the haulage industry put forward by qualified speakers.
A Practical Coachworks Manager Available.
We know of a man, age 38, who for the past 12 years has been responsible for the design and development of wood and metal coachwork for goods and passenger vehicles, and for five years of this time he has been assistant coachworks manager. He has had practical experience in almost every other branch of the industry. Letters should be addressed "Coachworks Manager," care of the Editor.
Manchester to Spend £140,000 on Transport.
Approximately £140,000 will be Spent on transport services by the cleansing and the highways committees of the Manchester Corporation during the year ending 'March 31, 1936. The cleansing department budgets for an expenditure of £119,655, of which £46,309 will go to mechanical transport, £57,405 to horse-drawn -Vehicles, trem:bler-type coil contained in a neat case which is provided with spring clips for securing it to some suitable part of the machine. There are three leads, one for connection to the distributor, one to earth the coil, and the third for attachment to the dynamo or battery. The price of the apparatus is £1 Os. 6d.
A Code of the Road.
A useful booklet entitled "The Code of the Road" has been compiled by the Eagle Star and British Dominions Insurance Co., Ltd., 1, Threadneedle Street, London, E.C.2, for distribution free of charge. The introduction has been written by the Minister of Transport, and all technical points have been checked by the Ministry's traffic specialists. Copies are available at all Eagle Star offices.
Holland Buys More Tractors.
Last year Holland imported 292 tractors, as compared with 174 machines in 1933, the respective values (converting Dutch guilders at 7.5 to the £) being £52,134 and £38,000. The United States supplied 148 units, followed by Great Britain with 73.
