Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ro Saturday, March 12th, there was kJ held in Paris what was called a rally of vehicles operating on national fuels. It will be remembered that these rallies have been held from time to time of late years, and, so far as fuels went, the recent event produced nothing that was new.

What, however, was interesting was the development in application. For instance, two of our photographs show passenger-carrying vehicles—one a Peugeot all-weather saloon vehicle accommodating five people, and the other a hotel bus body on a Panhard and Lovassor chassis, each equipped with a gas-producing appliance. The Panhard hotel bus has a Knight sleeve-valve engine, of which Panhard and Levassor arc sole

manufacturers in France, and the engine w,ill run either, on spirit or with producer-gas obtained from wood charcoal. The gas generator and scrubber are placed in front of the body, one on each side of the driver's seat, and a certain amount of neatness in the installation has been ensured.

The Peugeot ear, which we illustrate, has its gas-producer equipment mounted on a light framework hinged to the rear end of the frame of the vehicle and supported by a castor wheel. The apparatus is well protected from the elements, and is a clever instance of adaptation, the use of which will, of course, be material in the case of a vehicle operating in a country where liquid fuel is either dear or unobtainable. A number of lorries using Carbonite as the combustible fuel tools part in the rally, and of these we illustrate a Liberty 6-7-ton lorry on which a Rex generator was employed ; we also illustrate a Renault chassis employing a generator developed by this maker.

The Automobile Club of Prance has equipped a Panhard and Levassor lorry with a laboratory, in which various fuels can be tried and demonstrated. This vehicle, running on producer-gas, took part in the rally, The De Diens ..employed theRex generator burning Carbonite. Berliets showed three vehicles and a generator in which wood fuel was employed, and Delahayes also showed a very neat equipment an a large-capacity lorry.
