• One of the biggest fleets of Bedford Midi vans in the country is being set-up by a new company, Home Buy, which will use the long-time unemployed to sell household products on people's doorsteps.
Home Buy is acquiring 270 short-wheelbase Bedford Midis on contract hire from Skippers of Gloucester. The vehicles, worth £1.8 million in total, have been specially adapted by Whitacres to carry nine Home Buy salespeople together with all the merchandise for three days' work.
Home Buy chairman Carl Ager says if the pilot scheme in South Wales proves successful, Home Buy could be investing up to .29 million in the vehicles over the next three years.
The Midis will be serviced and maintained by Skippers under the contract hire agreement. The window van vehicles are to be fitted with nine seats in the passenger area, and a further couple of foldaway bench seats in the stowage area, included to avoid tax.
Whitacres says the first 10 converted Midis will be ready by 1 August.
