I FOUND the article on Volvo's accident unit very interesting, but there is one safety aspect we have all missed. At least, I confess I have, and I've been in transport training all my working life.
I refer to left-hand-drive hgv used in this country, and the blind spot in the area of the offside front wheel. When changing from the nearside lane to the centre lane, a left-handdrive hgv could literally run over a/small vehicle — any mIrror Check would not reveal a vehicle running close to the offside front wheel.
I feel the addition of a viewing window in the lower front of the body would cut down the risk a n d combined with a low-fitted mirror would eliminate it altogether.
Until being involved in this type of accident, it just hadn't occurred to me what an enormous area is involved. Luckily my accident was a low-speed one. The artic that tried to run over me was a Volvo!
