Lorry Thefts Down By 16 Per Cent.

THE value of goods stolen from commercial vehicles in the London area was 16 per cent, less in the first quarter of 1962 than in the last quarter of 1961. According to information issued by the Road Haulage Association, the number of thefts also fell.
The comparable figures are: last quarter 1961, thefts, 1.100; value. • £200,000; first quarter 1962, thefts, 1,000; value, £167,000.
Commenting on these results, Mr. J. T. Brown, chairman of the R.H.A.'s vehicles security committee, says: " When in so many other directions crime statistics are increasing, operators can take some of the credit for making the life of the lorry thief more difficult. Tribute must also be paid to the work and co-operation of the police.
"The encouraging results must not be taken as a reason for any slackening. The position is still serious and there is room .f or a good deal more improvement.The committee are considering some new security ideas, and the volunteer "observer corps patrols will soon be operating.
