ALTHOUGH this was the first time that earth-moving equipment has been shown at these conferences, there were many vacant seats in the delegates' enclosure before the end of the demonstrations.
In the refuse-collector field there was a new gang orderly in the shape of a 2-cu,-yd. machine based on a Lister truck powered by a Lister 3,1h.p. aircooled oil engine. Production models. which will be marketed by Municipal Supplies, Ltd., 18 Piershill Terrace; Edinburgh, 8, will have manually operated tipping gear. As the power pack is based on the driven single wheel, the steering can be turned full circle and the machine used as a pedestrian-controlled one.
The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co.. Ltd., Hunslet, Leeds, 10, presented the prototype of a new light sweeper, powered by a small air-cooled petrol engine. It can be used in parks and
similar places for clearing litter. Its transverse brush lifts the solid matter into a bin and the dust and light matter are lifted by vacuum into a collector bag. It is fitted with a large filter and is dustless in operation.
An Unexpected entry came in the form of a second small sweeper operating on the same general principle, but of entirely different design. This was the Magpie battery-electric made by Cimex-Fraser Tuson, Ltd., Orpington, Kent. It has a four-speed mechanical gearbox to provide the forward ratios and art electric reverse. It has two electric motors each of 2.6 h.p., one being for traction and the other to drive the vacuum fan. Chains are used in the transmission. Sweepings are collected in a removable wheeled box and the dust in a tray. This machine also performs the duties of a normal vacuum cleaner for use on walls or for similar duties.
