Mark Green, logistics quality manager for Kuehne + Nagel in Germany, says: "The stowaways issue is very serious as we are crossing the Channel daily into the UK. We are seeing illegal immigrants turning up in Belgium to try and catch a ride to Britain.
"We once had a driver stabbed with a knife by an illegal immigrant, and we frequently get messages of attempted attacks. Drivers are well aware of the risks."
Green advises all truckers to avoid lengthy breaks at Calais, and if they do spot a clandestine trying to enter their trailer, they should call the police and avoid physical confrontation.
The company uses hard-sided trailers with security locks to cross the Channel.
