Dublin is about to impose time slots for deliveries on key routes to the city centre. Brendan Nolan reports.

TIME RESTRICTIONS on deliveries to Dublin city centre will begin on 1 March.

Deliveries will be banned between 7am-10am and 12.30pm7pm except at specified loading bays. Clearways lasting some nine and a half hours every working day will apply on a range of strategic routes.

The council has warned that operators who ignore these restrictions will have their vehicles clamped and face prosecution. It advises businesses on the affected routes to draw up delivery management plans in consultation with their suppliers.

Officials plan an information campaign in the run-up to the 1 March launch date and say they are available to discuss problems caused by the ban.

Dublin-based Al'trans, which delivers pharmaceutical and healthcare products to retailers, has switched to 24-hour operation in advance of new regulations. Al'trans MD Paul Tuohy says: "We are trying to be proactive and have gone 24 hours so we will be in a position to cater for customers that have deliveries outside the normal working hours."

The restrictions were originally due to begin in September 2000; they were postponed until this year following protests from angry hauliers.

The revised restrictions will be reviewed after the first month of operation.
