It is understood that the Birmingham Sub-area, the Western Area Regional Committee and Frome Sub-area of A.R.O have passed votes of confidence in the Association.
A meeting at Birmingham, last Friday, called to decide on the future course of action, was addressed by Mr. L. W. GupwelI and Mr. . E. C. Whitaker, whose resignations from the Association.were reported in last week's issue, as well as by Mr. R. W. Sewill, national director. It is stated that a vote in support of A.R.O. was passed. Mr. C. S. Dunbar was elected chairman, and a new committee was appointed.
On Monday, a meeting of the Western Area Regional Committee; presided over by Mr. G. Smart, is stated to have passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the Association. Support for the parent body was also expressed at a meeting, held on the same day, of Frome Sub-area.
Will .A.R.O. Appeal?
Although it . is not yet known definitely whether A.R.O. passenger section at Newcastle-on-Tyne will appeal against the decision of the Northern Traffic. Commissioners on the use 01 12-journey tickets, all the local authorities in Durham are to appeal. . It was learned at the offices of at Newcastle, on Monday, that a meeting of members had been held, when the matter was fully discussed, and a preliminary decision not to appeal was taken. Another meeting was to be held before a definite decision would be made.
Minister. at C.M.I.J.A. Luncheon.
Mr. L. Hare-Belisha, Minister of Transport, has accepted the invitation. of the C.M.U.A. to be its principal guest at the 33rd annual luncheon, which is to be held on April 7 at the Savoy Hotel, London.
C.M.U.A, Policy Explained.
At a well-attended C.M.U.A. meeting at Dartford, an Monday, Mr. W. A. Willson, chairman of the London and Home Counties Division, dealt fully with the revised policy of the Association. In the unavoidable absence of Mr. F. E. Clarke, J.P., M.P., Major R. A. B. Smith, immediate past-president, acted as .chairman.
Speaking on the importance of operators supporting the new C.M.U.A, policy, Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer, said that, if they failed to do so immediately, it would be too late for operators to complain in two or three years' time.
A.R.O.'s Future in Hull.
The committee of A.R.O. Hull Sub-area has been augmented by the addition of a number of well-known operators, and now comprises :—
Mews. H. Walker, Frank Cook, T. Spencer, L. V. Brooksbank, J. Newham, E. F. Artrnson, G. Hunter, R. Hodgson, D. Wells, J. W. WilSimon, W. L. Dees, Hayes, H. Shores, Stewart,
Eastangh, J. H. Langdale and Capt. Marshall. It is understood that the new committee will review the whole position of the A.R.O. organization in Hull, at a meeting on January 26.
New Member of A.R.O. Committee.
Mr. R. Hindley, chairman of A.R.O. East Lancashire Area, has been elected to the Association's committee of management.
Mr. Charlton to Meet Operators.
Mr. Alan Chorlton, M.P. for Bury, is to meet representatives of the C.M.U.A. South-East Lancashire Area and the Amalgamated Horse and Motor Owners Association, to discuss operators' difficulties. The meeting, which is
to take place in Bury, is the outcome of a meeting of commercial-vehicle owners in Busy, on December 14, when a resolution was passed demanding that the 1933 -Act should be amendea,
"NATIONAL ASPIRATIONS v. LOCAL REQUIREMENTS."
Influenza kept a thi:rd of the guests from attending the fifth annual dinner of the Midlands Coach and Transport Association, at Leicester, last week. Of the 160 persons expected, 110 were present.
Mr, E. J, Shopland, clerk, to the West Midland Traffic Commissioners, congratulated the Association on its steady progress during the 'year, "You are not having fireworks,' be said, " but you are doing your job. Some,. times I think' national aspirations overshadow local requirements."
Mr. Shopland went on to suggest that licensing restrictions were not' altogether obnoxious. "They arc like the hedge around a garden ; they keep out intruders. If the gardener breaks
through hedge to steal his neighbour's apples and gets scratched, that is his own look-out," he said.
Mr. W. H. Perry mentioned the possibility of his resignation from the position of secretary.
Mr. W. Lindsay Everard, M.P., President of the Association, remarked that his firm operated the heaviest vehicle running in the East Midland Area, and he spoke gratefully of the assistance which the Association and Mr. perry had rendered 'him.
S.T.R. at West Bromwich.
Details have now been fixed for the lecture which S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, is to give at a C.M.U.A. meeting at West Bromwich on February 1. The event will take place at the Sandwell Hotel, West Bromwich, at 7.30 p.m., and Mr. W. A. Standley will occupy the chair.
A.R.O. Opens in Nottingham.
A Nottingham area office of A.R.O. has been opened, and Mr. Tomlinson has been appointed district organizer.
