Brief Details of the Progress Made by the Municipal Transport Undertaking in Zurich.

THE engineer of the undertaking running the municipal tramways and motorbuses in Zurich, Switzerland, has sent .us a copy of the returns relating to the running of the fleet of six single-deck buses which were put in operation at the beginning of August, 1927, . down to the end of September last. It shows that the number of passcngers carried during the 14 months was 1,344,271, a monthly average of 96,020.

At first the public did net seem to be altogether in favour of the buses, the average monthly total during the first five months amounting to only about

90,000 passengers. The difficulties associated with the initial period of operation have, however, been overcome, and a monthly average of over 108,300 passengers was carried during the .quarter ended with September last. The total bus-mileage has also shown an upward tendency ; at the outset the monthly average was only 14,970 busmiles, but in the last quarterly period under review it was 17,937 bus-miles, the total bus-mileage for the whole 14 months being 225,685. The receipts, which for the 14 months amounted to 396,517 francs, or approximately £15,860, are also improving, the last three quarters having been as follow :— January-March, £2,458; April-June, £2,840; July-September, £3,015.

As against an increase in the number of passengers and receipts the average takings per passenger and per vehiclemile show a decline from 24.1 centimes in the first five months to 23.3 centimes (25 centimes = 1d.) in the nine months ended with September in the one case and from 1 fr. 45i centimes (about 13.9d.) to approximately 1 fr. 33 centimes (13.2d.) in the...other ease referred to.
