MPS HAVE EXPRESSED "serious reservations" at Vosa 's plans to outsource some of its most important responsibilities to private companies.

The roles the enforcement agency believes are suitable for privatising include training, roadside enforcement support and LGV testing. The Transport Select Committee says the number of staff considered "in-scope" for outsourcing is almost 1,700, more than half the Vosa workforce.

A report by the committee, which scrutinises the Department for Transport's activities, says: "We would question the claim that it is not the DfT's intention to privatise Vosa if over half the staff were outsourced to other companies. We have serious reservations about proposals to outsource testing and enforcement responsibilities."

A DfT spokesman says: "Vosa is undertaking a feasibility study into private-sector involvement. The study aims to establish whether outsourcing would deliver better value for money, improve customer services, lighten the regulatory burden and deliver wider government objectives."

The Select Committee also expressed concern over the high rate of non-compliance with safety standards by LGVs, particularlyforeign-registered vehicles.
