• A quarter of IIK hauliers are expanding at the expense of others but a third are in danger of going out of business unless they radically restructure, says a new report.
Hauliers saw average turnover increases of 16% during 1994, but more than 60% failed to register such a rise— highlighting considerable variations in performance.
More worryingly, the survey of 550 limited companies and plcs, suggests that 44% of haulage firms are in "danger", or should be treated with "caution", a figure fractionally high er than for 1993. Almost 40% of firms are rated as strong or good with a sixth of all firms reporting sales increases in excess of 30% for the year.
There are grim statistics for those hoping to make their fortunes in haulage. The industry's average profit margin was 4% of sales, while the larger firms reported just 5%. No profits were reported by 12%. Average wages in the haulage industry remain suppressed, with 40% of staff paid n2-16,000.
