• Government laws aimed at stopping high vehicles hitting bridges have been delayed to allow longer consultations (CM 9-15 Nov 95).
The safety measures were due to be phased between April and October in two parts, but now the regulations will begin to be introduced from 1 August. From that date LGVs over 3m will need in-cab signs indicating height.
From 1 January 1997 all new rigid vehicles with power-operated equipment will have warning devices fitted that sound if cranes are raised while in transport.
Insiders add that from 1 August 1997 rigid vehicles made from 1991 will also be subject to the new laws. Then from 1 January 1998 the laws will be passed on to trailers.
The Freight Transport Association says: "We are still waiting for official confirmation but if this is right then it's a step in the right direction."
