• Manchester TEC has extended the age limit for entering its Modern Apprenticeship in road haulage and distribution to 24. This will allow employers to attract TEC funding and support apprentices until they are 27 years old. Contact: 01923 858461.

• The Road Haulage and Distribution Training Council has launched an initiative that will enable industry apprentices, some as young as 18, taking NVO courses to receive driver training at the same time, The Young Driver Training Scheme is open to 18-21-year-olds and has backing from the DOT, RHA and FTA.

• SkillAuto, the automobile industries' new competitions organisation, is introducing a competition to find the best young heavy vehicle repair technician. To be eligible technicians must have received at least three years' formal training and have been born on or after 1 January 1975.
