• Perkins Technology, part of the Perkins Engines Group, is taking the lead in six diesel projects being undertaken by the UK Engine Emissions Consortium (UKEEC). This joint venture, set up by the Department of Trade and Industry and 12 companies with vehicle manufacturing interests, is to clean up vehicle exhaust emissions.
The DTI is making 22.3 million available for 11 projects — five related to petrol engines, and six to diesel. Perkins will be involved in programmes covering diesel engine design, new development engine testing techniques, engine control technology, the impact of lubri
Pe
cants and the effects of fuel oil and alternative fuels on emissions.
The projects, which should be completed within three years, will include tests on specially designed composite pistons, and examining ways of modifying the temperature of the piston crown to reduce particulate emissions.
