• Though concerned about granting a licence for premises that do not yet exist, North Western Licensing Authority Martin Albu has renewed the licence of Fowlers Depositaries (Morecambe & Heysham), in respect of 10 vehicles and eight trailers to be kept at its existing operating centre or its proposed new site.
The company had applied to renew the licence in respect of 20 vehicles and trailers, with operating centres at James Street and Mellishaw Lane, Morecambe. Its existing licence authorised the operation of eight vehicles and two trailers from James Street.
DIp vehicle examiner Brian Hayhurst said he examined four vehicles in September, issuing one delayed prohibition. Many of the vehicles were under two-years-old. An examination of the maintenance records showed gaps of several months between inspections. The vehicles were maintained along with vehicles belonging to Needham Transport, by Nigel Needham with the assis tance of a part-time fitter.
For the company, John Backhouse said that when the Mellishaw Lane premises were opened, the whole operation including Needham Transport, would be moved there.
Director Roy Needham said it was hoped to have Mellishaw Lane finished by October. The additional vehicles were required to meet expansion in the business and the acquisition of the new operating centre. At the time of the examiner's visit, the vehicles were being inspected monthly, but his son Nigel had not always recorded the inspections. The vehicle Oven the prohibition had been off the road in the gage for 10 days.
Road Haulage Association inspection forms were now in use and all inspections were being recorded. Needham Transport operated six vehicles and two trailers.
They eventually hoped to bring the two businesses together.
Roy Needham said a new fitter had been taken on and when more vehicles were acquired they would increase the maintenance staff.
