• The Bus and Coach Council is pressing the Government to act on child safety on school buses.
In a letter to selected MPs, BCC director-general Veronica Palmer has pointed out that the 66,000 Class V vehicles used by local authorities are subject to less stringent rules than other PSVs and should be brought up to the same standard as those run by BCC members.
However, she has stressed that of the 11,435 deaths and serious injuries suffered by school children on Britain's roads in 1988, PSVs accounted for only 59 serious injuries and no deaths.
