• Employee-owned Derby City Transport is to make most of Midland Red North's 50 Derby-based staff redundant, as it winds down minibus operations in the city this week, following its purchase of MRN's 34 minibuses and service DCT will withdraw MRN's competi tive routes within the next six weeks and will keep only a few of the 34 minibuses.
The deal marks the end of a bus war which has been escalating since July last year: DCT buses will also pull out of MRN's territory on Tamworth town services. The deal will be paid off by instalments, to give Midland Red North an interest in the successful absorption of its services in Derby. No interest in the company, where share dealings will be frozen for about 12 months, has been gained by MRN.
MRN moved into Derby just as DCT was being sold to its workforce, prompting DCT retaliation with Optare midibuses. DCT in turn launched doubledeckers in Tamworth, operating from 10:00hrs to 14:00hrs, with fares kept down as the buses were already in the area, having worked school contracts for the county.
