A range of automatic transmissions, developed by Voith for the midibus and CV markets, are scheduled for series production in 1991.

The Optimate 645, weighing 142kg, is a new kind of automatic mechanical transmission incorporating an integral starting clutch, retarder and six forward gear ratios. It is suitable for engines rated at up to 140kW (18'7hp), developing up to 645Nm (4761bft) of torque.

Primary retardation, applied manually, is said to cater for 90% of all braking operations without wear. Gear changing is fully automatic and controlled electronically.
