• Voith plans to market its small Model 120 CV retarder in Britain soon after production begins in July.
The retarder, weighing about 70kg, is aimed at trucks between 7.5 and 20 tonnes.
During the next few months Voith will be placing a number of trial units with major operators in Britain, as well as conducting a market survey.
The 120 retarder has a hydrodynamic brake mounted to the rear of the gearbox. Energy is transferred from the rotor, which turns with the prop-shaft, to the stator giving a retardant torque of up to 1,700Nm (1,2531bft).
It is operated pneumatically, and the level of braking is controlled electronically to suit individual vehicle model specifications Voith has already supplied ERF with more than 200 of its larger Model 130 retarder units, although most of these have been specified for export orders to South Africa
