Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I HAVE been encouraged to see the interest your editorial about the European Transport Maintenance Council (CM December 14) has stimulated, with letters from Garry Turvey, David Ivison and Freddie Plaskett. luminaries of the Freight Transport Association, Institute of Road Transport Engineers and the Road Haulage Association respectively.

The ETMC is about dialogue (across national and language barriers) among and between operators, vehicle and component manufacturers and leg isi an irs.

We believe that by meeting on "neutral ground", maintenance, equipment and legislative problems can be discussed freely and the machiner) for finding the vital, harmonised solutions accelerated.

The undoubted success of the

organisation has been aided by the involvement of the FTA and IRTE. would like these and Other European bodies, especially the International Ro Transport Union arid RHA, to becom. more involved and to this end plan on discussing with them ways in which V, can all work together.

The ETMC has come a long way in just three years. Undoubtedly there is still much to be done, but we do belie, that the organisation can and will become the European operators' mouthpiece.

As the ETMC develops it will also c much more than simply organise an annual conference. We are already working on a number of ETMC standard procedures which will assist al fleet users, large and small.
