tO R '1 ransport Minister )eter Bottomley has praised he crews-of the large fleet of Tecialist snow clearing ;chicks for keeping Britain's notorways free of the worst ffects of the recent bad meather.
The Department of Transaort has a total of 280 ;pecialist vehicles and they lave been working overtime :o deal with the problem.
On a visit to the Carrville Motorway Maintenance Compound on the Al (M) :tear Durham, Bottomley [banked the teams of dedi:ated workers who were turning out night after night, day after day, often in the tnost appalling and dangerous weather to ensure that motorways remained open. When it is decided to salt the 2,400km of motorways and 8,000km of all-purpose trunk roads in England, thousands of workers work on the roads.
There are 258 purpose-built small ploughs/spreader vehicles and 21 snow ploughs, operating from around 100 maintenance depots.
The two hour target time for clearing snow lying on motorways is only rarely exceeded.
