A Van as a Business,-getter.

A London firm of manufacturers recently purchased a 15-cwt. Darracci delivery van, with a view to ascertaining its exact value as a sales agent. The idea was to get into touch with the smaller shops in the outlying villages by means of the van, and to sell them quantities of the firm's manufactures.

For the first two months the van went out in the morning and returned at night, covering, on an

average, 80 miles a day. In this way the returns just about cleared expenses. A great deal of time was wasted in getting out of the busy London streets in the morning and returning again at night. To avoid this, the system was altered and the van went out for a trip lasting three days at a time. This not only reduced the daily mileage, but increased the business done, due, of course, to the fact that the van was on the spot first thing in the morning and could stay at work a little later at night. The runs were then increased to a week in duration, and gave still better results than before. During the last 12 months the van has covered 20,000 miles without serious breakdown.
