HOLLAND'SBIGGESThaulier, Vos Logistics, has been hit by wildcat strikes at two of its depots in the north of the Netherlands.

Drivers are demanding guarantees over future employment hi the face of a business reorganisation, a threat to close one of its northern depots, and rumours that Dutch drivers were to be replaced with cheaper employees from Eastern Europe.

The drivers downed tools last Thursday when they discovered that staffing levels were to be cut initially from 105 to 65 and then to just 40 people.

A spokesman for Vos played down the rumours of cheaper foreign staff, but admitted it would be looking to use its drivers more "efficiently-. "They are most efficient when used on trips from and to Eastern Europe. We would like our Dutch drivers to be more flexible not maintaining their 'own' truck any more, and able to work from different bases.

"Eastern European drivers only work from our Eastern European establishments. People will not he made redundant and we will nc replace our drivers with peopl from Eastern Europe."

Dutch trade unions are also i negotiations with Vos, seekin promises that there will not be jo cuts at two other depots in the cer tre and the south of Holland.

The striking drivers in the nont have now gone back to work.
