• Livestock hauliers will be fined up to £1,000 per animal if they do not stick to export journey plans under a code of practice to be enacted on 23 January,
The Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food says further penalties for breaches of the new code could include the prevention of all further movements of animals. Hauliers wanting to export livestock will have to submit journey plans to MAFF which include a maximum of 15 hours journey time between resting places (lairages) where animals can be fed and watered (CM 814 September).
The current maximum penal ty for breaches of journey plans is the withdrawal of export health certificates.
The code of practice is the UK's response to the failure of European Union agriculture ministers to agree on common rules for animal welfare during transport at a meeting earlier this month.
