Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Mercedes-Benz (UK) has developed a low-height version of its right-hand-drive 1838 tractor. The 3.6m-wheelbase two-axle tractor has a groundto-top fifth-wheel height of 980mm, allowing operators to run with a 3m internal-height semi-trailer within the 4m Continental height limit.

Modifications to the standard-height 1838 include the repositioning of the rear brake chambers to below the top of the chassis and the adoption of a deep drop beam front axle.

The normal 1838 tyres are replaced by 285/60 R2'2.5 covers which reduce the tractor's GVW from 17.00 tonnes to 16.8 tonnes, while the rear axle rating remains unchanged the front axle drops to 6.3 tonnes.

The rear axle air suspension retains its raise/lower function; operators can also specify the low-height 1838 with front axle air along with a choice of either the G155 overdrive-top 16-speed transmission or the G200 double-top (hi/low split) over drive box.

An example of the low-height 1838 was shown at the recent Hanover Show; prices are available on application.
