• Smoky diesels in the East Midlands are to be targeted in a vehicle-spotting blitz on 1 February. Environmental protection officers based in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire will work from strategic points on routes used by HGVs. Other authorities may join the purge.
Midlands co-ordinator Dr Bill Pearce, environmental protection officer at Mansfield Borough Council, says teams will be on slight inclines where vehicles change up a gear. Their reports will be passed to the Vehicle Inspectorate who will contact operators and advise them to take remedial action and report back.
Those who fail to rectify problems could be issued with prohibition notices. "We are already collating reports of sightings by members of the public," says a Department of Transport official.
