• Unless vehicle excise duty is slashed UK hauliers will suffer when they compete with European operators after harmonisation in 1992, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has warned.
In its budget submission to the Chancellor, the SMMT says that VED accounts for 45% of hauliers' costs, and should be "brought into line with other EEC countries as speedily as possible".
The society also stresses that Britain and Ireland's 38tonne limit puts operators at a disadvantage compared with EEC competitors.
