• V L Churchill has opened a centre at Daventry, where it will be training customers to use its garage equipment. This includes Dieseltune, Wheelforce and Allen test equipment.
• Although aimed mainly at the car servicing sector, the Dieseltune equipment has applications in the commercial vehicle market. The increased use of diesel engines in light vans and cars is altering the image of the diesel engine from being oily and crude to being an efficient and finely tuned device requiring sophisticated diagnostic equipment.
The DX 4000 diagnostic kit, which costs £385 is aimed at the commercial vehicle market, and is good basic equipment for the workshop. It contains an optical tachometer, a flexible inspection lamp, a compression tester, a set of injector extractors and a minitest, which tests injectors.
The DX 710 Minitest tests nozzle opening pressure, back leakage, seat tightness, chatter and spray condition. It can be held in either hand, vice or fitted to the injector in situ.
Claimed by Churchill to be the most accurate on the market, the AVL diesel injection tester is another part of the Dieseltune range. The heart of the device is a clamp-on transducer which attaches to the injector pipe, and uses piezo foil to sense the pulse of the fuel going to the injector.
Used either with a crankshaft position sensor where fitted, or the stroboscope that is part of the kit, the AVL 875 analyses injector timing without the need to dismantle injector or pipe. The clamp has to be fixed at a precise distance from the injector, which differs from one engine to another, to obtain an accurate reading.
Should an injector need shifting, a slide hammer with a variety of adaptors is available, and an injector dismantling jig. Glow plugs can be tested whether in or out of the engine by the DX 900 glow plug tester, which also checks the supporting circuitry.
Every month Churchill will be running a one-day course called diesel engine testing, and costing 269.
Although mainly aimed at the light van and car servicing sector, Churchill will adjust the course to fit larger commercial vehicles if there is a demand.
