Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• One-hundred and sixty exhibitors took space at Autotech '87 — International Bus, Truck and Car Products and Manufacturing Technology Exhibition and Congress — at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, in December. The high level of interest was said to indicate growing confidence in signs of recovery in the industry.

Norgren Martonair manned its stand with personnel from its special contracts division, offering assistance to engineers seeking solutions to pneumatic control problems.

Demand for its Enots brand push-in tubes continues to grow, says the company, and its catalogue now lists over 40 different fitting types.

These fittings meet the requirements set by FMVSS 106 and DIN 74324, and are now extensively used by most leading truck and bus manufacturers.

For the first time Ricardo displayed an advanced form of fully automatic gearbox designed for cars/car-derived vans, but equally appliable to trucks, buses and off-highway vehicles. This gearbox embodies the Ricardo ALT (automatic layshaft transmission) concept, and Ricardo has the sole rights to a number of its patented features.

The concept incorporates: • Wet clutch take off from rest; • Multi-ratio fully automatic power gear-shifts; • Layshaft-type gearing; • Non-rotating clutch actuators with zero-leak seals; • Electronic over hydraulic control.

The Ricardo concept shows its commitment to the integration of the engine and transmission using sophisticated electronic control systems.

Among the other stands was that of BesTek. Its TekMate brake and acceleration monitoring system monitors and records brake and acceleration performance in diesel and petrol engines.

Stanadyne Automotive Products Group showed its diesel engine timing system and Slip Top Nozzle for diesel fuel injection.

Rosemount Beckman Indust rial displayed its system for analysing raw exhaust gas from diesel or petrol engines for up to 50 hours without filter changes.

Clayton Dewandre WABCO showed its Category 1 anti-lock braking system and drive slip control, suitable for most commercial vehicles, including trailers.
