I HAVE been trying since August to persuade myself that if I refused to think of the Festival of St Selfridge and All Shopkeepers, it would go away. Alas, it will not. So I offer my commiserations to all Christmas conscripts. May they be sufficiently anaesthetised by alcohol during the indigestive season at least to escape the painful reminder that relatives are rarely people one would choose as friends.
