SOUTH YORKSHIRE is continuing its cheap fares policy which will cost £45m to support next year, but West Yorkshire PTE wants to increase its fares by 24 per cent.
South Yorkshire PTE has maintained its cheap fares policy since 1974, and the latest move means that they will remain the same until April 1981 at least.
County council leader Roy Thwaites says that a lp fare increase would cost the average family £14.60 a year, whereas an extra lp on the rates would only cost the same family £2.20 a year.
WYPTE's increase, which follows a 15 per cent rise last August, follows predictions of a £2.5m deficit by next year.
Commenting on the WYPTE decision, Mr Thwaites said: "The difference between our policy and that of West Yorkshire and other transport authorities is that we are not losing passengers and revenue but are increasing them."
