Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Barwell Engineering Ltd has developed a tyre-retreading process which extrudes the tread rubber

directly on to the tyre, and forms the pattern at the same time, without the use of moulds. The system incorporates a unit known as the Pressurtreader which is basically a volumecontrolled hydraulic ram extruder with a reciprocating die • that applies fresh rubber under pressure to either a radial or cross-ply tyre casing. When the tyre, with its unvulcanized patterned tread, is cured in an autoclave, a simple mechanism is used to deal with the pressured splice.

It is claimed that the bond obtained is more effective than that provided by the traditional processes and that the mileage obtained from the tyre is increased. Tread design can be varied by changing the simple disc controlling the reciprocating die.

A complete plant for producing Pressurtread truck tyres includes a template-controlled peeler buffing machine on which the old tread is peeled off accurately and rapidly. One obvious advantage of this process is that, within its range, no new equipment has to be purchased for additional sizes or tread patterns which may be required.
