A-Double bottomsis the expression used
in the USA to denote the haulage of two trailers coupled in tandem. These could be of any length from 20 to 30ft. In the American Far West the present trend is to couple 27 or 28ft trailers in tandem.
The trend towards double bottoms is increasing and some expect it to spread across America in the next five years, although serious traffic congestion problems in the Eastern States may present difficulties.
The system has distinct economic advantages and there seems no good reason why double bottoms should not be used for motorway trunking in Britain, given suitable depot siting
