A GAS TURBINE combustion system that produces exhaust gases with a lower hydrocarbon content than is found in most urban atmospheres was described in a recent report of three research engineers of General Motors Corporation to the Society of Automotive Engineers.
In one of the road tests mentioned the exhaust gas of a G1-309 turbine contained less than one part of hydrocarbon per million parts of air and only 34 p.p.m. of carbon monoxide; a car powered by a petrol engine of comparable output emitted 222 p.p.m. of hydrocarbon and 1.28 per cent of carbon monoxide.
Current emission limits in the United States for passenger cars are 275 p.p.m. of hydrocarbon and 1.5 per cent, or 15,000 p.p.m. of carbon monoxide.
