W. Alexander and Sons (Northern) Ltd. are having to get off the buses and walk across several railway bridges, following the imposition of severe weight restrictions on the bridges by British Railways.

In most cases the maximum permitted weight on the bridges is five tons gross, which obviously precludes almost all road haulage and passenger vehicles when laden. The restrictions are likely to continue for two or three months until the bridges are suitably strengthened. Alexanders operate single-decker buses on the routes concerned.

Alternative routes are signposted for goods vehicles.
