for use in restricted spaces

ARANDY little three-wheeled sweeper, known under the registered name of Reliance, has just been put on the market by the Premier Steel Tube Co. Ltd., 15-19, Kingsway, London, W.C.2.

Motive power is provided by a J.A.P. 5 h.p. air-cooled singlecylindered engine, and the drive is transmitted through a four-speed gearbox and a metal-to-metal clutch. The brakes take action on the two front wheels. On the machine that we inspected the water tank was of 25gallon capacity, the water being delivered by means of a centrifugal pump to the sprinkler nozzles at the front.

Pour brushes are provided, the main one being of the rotary pattern, whilst in front of it there are three smaller stationary brnihes, those at the outside extremities being set longitudinally. The brushes may be raised from the ground by means of a lever, which, at the same time, automatically puts them out of action. The front brushes are intended to sweep away paper, straw, etc., which might tend to clog the rotary equipment.

Another lever permits the brushes and their supporting carriage to be inclined to each side. The brushes can easily be removed.

In the case of the machine that we Inspected, the driver walked behind it, steering it by means of a fixed bar carrying the throttle, air and clutch controls. We are informed that, if desired, a seat can he fitted, in which case it is possible for the machine to work rather more rapidly than would otherwise be the case.

The Reliance sweeper is intended for work chiefly at railway stations, garages, on wide pavements and in other places in which it is impracticable to use a full-sized outfit. It is claimed that 7,000 sq. yds. can be swept in an hour, consuming three pints of petrol.

Where the work to be tackled requires the use of a rubber squeegee in place of the front stationary brushes, this can be supplied. A useful feature of this machine is that the sweepings can be dumped at intervals, and thus can be conveniently collected. The price of the sweeper without seat is f175.
