Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

One of the most recent vehicles delivered by Renry Garner, Ltd., Moseley Motor. Works, Birmingham, is that which is shown in a picture on this page. The chassis c-onsists of the company's standard 2-ton model AL, with an 11-ft. 'wheelbase, to which. is fitted an end-tipping body with detachable hinged sides. The tailboard is hinged at the top, and the company's patented

lever fastening is used for it. The driver's cab is the standard type, and included in the rear corners are posts which are connected by a transverse member ; this structure serves as a timber bolster. The body is elevated through the Medium of a single vertical screw and is operated by hand. The vehicle is fitted with solid tyres, and has been supplied to the order of a builder in Birmingham.

Number of Motor Vehicles in France.

A table which has just been issued gives the total number of touring cars in France in 1924 as 352,458; that of lorries and tractors as 200,000 and that of public-service motor vehicles 18,890,Cyclecars totalled 27,452; motorcycles with sidecars 20,848 and without sidecars 96.416. This makes a grand total of 716,957 motor-driven vehicles. As would be expected, the department of the Seine -boasts the highest number of vehicles, with 63,131 touring cars, 32,097 lorries and 16,369 publicservice motors. The Nord, the Ithnne, Alpes Maritimes and Seine Inferieute come next, whilst the smallest number of motor-driven vehicles was registered In the department of Lozere, where there are 117 touring ears.

Cesspool-emptying by Leyland.

The special municipal vehicle which is illustrated on this page comprises a Leyland chassis fitted with a 500gallon rectangular tank, recently supplied to the health department of the Poole Corporation for cesspool emptying, through the makers' agents for Southampton—Turner and Blakeway, Ltd. It is stated that this vehicle is

giving very satisfactory service to the authorities in Poole, and it will undoubtedly interest other .municipalities which are concerned with the problem of regularly emptying cesspools.

A small engine 'and pump which are towed are employed for filling the

tank, at the rear of which, as our illustration shows, a cage is fixed for carrying the delivery hose. The reason that the pump and its power unit are used as a portable outfit is because many of the cesspools which have to be dealt witliN'are located 200 ft. away from the roadway. The tank is emptied through a screwed-down valve in its base.

Institute of Transport Examina The Council of the Institute of Transport announces that the latest date for the receipt of applications for partial exemption from the graduate and associate membership examinations of the Institute is December 31st. Applications must be addressed to the secretary of the Institute at 15, Savoy Street, London, W.0.2.

Mr. A. M. Jones, who has been seeretary to the Firestone •Tyre and Rubber • Co. (1922), Ltd., has now been appointed London manager for the Firestone Plantations Co: Mr. F. A.

Upperton, previously in charge of the company's pneumatic tyre department, has been appointed to succeed Mr. Jones, and will occupy the dual position of secretary and sales manager.

Mr. T. IL Jenkins, secretary of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Bits Proprietors' Association, and secretary and director of Western Services, Ltd., has been made a J.P. for the County of Monmouthshire, his name being included amongst those commissioned in December, Mr. Jenkins is a member of a number of public bodies in Monmouthshire.

Ford's Orders for Machinery.

We are informed that during the past few months the Ford Motor Co. (England), Ltd., have ordered in England many thousand pounds worth of machinery on behalf of Ford factories in various parts of the world. Thefl machinery, for the most part, consists of presses, drilling machines, drop stampings, air compressors, pumps, textile machinery and general factory equipment, and some of the Ford factories to which this equipment has been supplied are situated in Copenhagen, Paris, Antwerp arid Buenos Aires.

Profits of United Automobile Services.

The report of United Automobile Services, Ltd., for the year ended September 30th last, reveals a net profit of 1.3;1,369, to which must be added the sum of 18,223 brought in from the previous year. The company are paying a dividend of 10 per cent—the same as for the previous year—whilst a sum of 113,000 is being placed to the reserve, and after these commitments have been met 16,539 remains to be carried forward.
