• Trucks carrying live animals are to be banned from the Channel Tunnel, Eurotunnel has announced.
Freight wagons used in the Chunnel will not have the airconditioning necessary to transport livestock humanely on the 35-minute journey, it says.
Eurotunnel says there is "growing concern about the welfare of livestock in transit" and the extra cost of providing airconditioning in the wagons would not be justified by the additional revenue gained.
There are still a number of other issues to be settled by Eurotunnel before the tunnel opens in June 1993. These include the final design of the freight wagons. Eurotunnel wants to use open-sided carriages for trucks, but this could be blocked by the Anglo-French commission in charge of safety.
