I I feel I must reply to the points raised in "RAC's rescue code is slammed" (CM 25-31 July), as I have headed the RAC work on this matter.
We did not consult the RRRA on the code of practice for BS5750 in the vehicle rescue and recovery industry as RRRA vice-chairman Tom Carruthers made it clear to
me on 5 March that RRRA wanted to represent members' interests, not set industry standards.
It is perhaps unfortunate that you received comments from AVRO when both the chairman and director were unavailable, as it is possible that the new vice-chairman Terry Jones would be unaware of the RAC, AVRO, and RM1 discussions.
We understand that AVRO welcomes the introduction of quality management standards to the industry and it hopes to contribute to later issues of the code and help improve it still further.
