• TNT Newsfast is to make an unspecified number of drivers redundant at its London newspaper distribution operation as part of a streamlining exercise.
The company is not prepared to reveal how many jobs will go while talks are under way with the Transport and General Workers' Union to relocate as many drivers as possible.
TNT says the job cuts are being carried out in the face of the present harsh economic climate to effect greater efficiencies and to ensure a continued and reliable service to our customers". The company was not prepared to expand further.
Newsfast's biggest London customer is Rupert Murdoch's News International, publisher of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun, News of the World and Today newspapers.
News International is reducing its London distribution area resulting in job cuts among its own distribution staff. In future Newsfast will service 5,600 London retailers with 10 small areas reverting to distribution through wholesalers.
However, News International is considering asking TNT Newsfast to take over the administration of its retail deliveries in the London area.
